I have been blogging for almost 4 years now and when I first started out I admittedly didn’t know what blogging really was, how to create one or who would end up reading it. All I knew I was I had a message to share and stories to tell. Now I’ve been able to grow my blog, build an online community and extend my brand into multiple revenue streams.
Through this series I will share some lessons learned from my own blogging journey and tips on the various ways you can monetize your blog into a bankable brand.
When you are ready to jump into the blogosphere, determining what your “niche” will be is an important first step. More than likely you already know what you want your blog to be about but if not some questions to ask yourself would be:
- What topics are you passionate about?
- What are your hobbies?
- What could you talk about all day long?
When I started my travel & lifestyle blog, www.mstravelchic.com it was because I LOVED to travel and I loved a GOOD DEAL! So it was easy for me to decide to center my blog on motivating women to travel and embrace new experiences by sharing travel tips, destination ideas and travel bargains.
Focusing your blog on a central theme will make it easy for you to determine the type of posts you want to write, articles to share and other content relevant to your niche to keep your fans, followers and readers coming back to your blog.
Sticking to a niche is also a quick way to become a subject matter expert! Because I’ve remained consistent in my travel focus I get tons of emails, tweets and requests to answer questions about my preferred travel agencies, best vacation spots, top hotel picks and just about anything travel related!
Don’t get too caught up in comparing yourself against other blogs either. While it can be a good idea to know about other blogs in your niche category and how you “stack up” against them, don’t try to duplicate them. Instead look at the strategy of successful bloggers and think about how you can develop your own path unique to who you are.
Keep your blog authentic, true to who you are and stay in your own lane.
